When Waiting Seems Endless- My Advice

When well-meaning people give advice such as “do not be in a hurry to marry” or “be patient, you will eventually have your own kids ” or “if you just keep working hard, you will eventually make lots of money”, such advice sound like the best thing to say to young people who look forward to a great life. However, when the people being addressed are older, people who have had unfulfilled expectations or who by reason of age alone, have a cause to worry and hurry, it does not sound like the perfect advice. For such people, there is every reason to want every good thing of life in the now; it should either have happened before now or it has to happen now. They have always heard “tomorrow, tomorrow” and it seems to never come.

The first advice I will give such a person is “ease every pressure”. Life is to be enjoyed and no one who puts so much pressure on himself concerning what is not available will enjoy the many other good things that are going on for him at the moment. Look around you and do what you enjoy and have the ability to do. Spend time doing your passion, building a business, spend time with your spouse, friends, and family. There are many people that have the things we want and are not living happy and so we can choose to be happy while we don’t have them while waiting for God to make it happen. What you are waiting for should not be allowed to define you, God created you beautiful.

My second piece of advice will be to make such a person realize that haste never leads to the end we desire. Seasons of waiting, leave us with two choices- either to keep waiting and doing things to please God all the way till there is a manifestation or to find other ways to produce the result we desire, whether it is pleasing to God or not. You have come too far and like the Mary Mary song “Ï just can’t give up now” lyrics, you have to believe that God has not brought you this far to leave you. These seasons call for making sound decisions that will favour the outcome we desire. Haste does not guarantee such sound decisions.

“Behold, I lay in Zion a stone for a foundation,
A tried stone, a precious cornerstone, a sure foundation;
Whoever believes will not act hastily.” (Isaiah 28:16, NKJV)

“But you will not leave in haste
    or go in flight;
for the Lord will go before you,
    the God of Israel will be your rear guard.”(Isaiah 52:12, NIV)

Someone also said “There’s no need to rush. What’s meant for you always arrives right on time”. (Mesmerizing Quotes.Com)

“A faithful person will be richly blessed,
    but one eager to get rich will not go unpunished.” (Proverbs 28:20, NIV)

This means that we only need to stay faithful and we will be blessed with what we are waiting for, but rushing after them the wrong way, will lead to regrets.

What are some examples of the wrong way that provide temporary escape but permanent regrets? Marrying the wrong person because we don’t want to be single anymore, having pre-marital sex, going diabolical in the search for a life partner, child or wealth, changing figures at work to make more money, walking with people who uphold the values we don’t believe just to get favored by them, and so on.

My third piece of advice to such a person is to handle the issue from a spiritual point of view. What do I mean? The weapons of our warfare are not carnal but mighty through God for making changes in our lives and situations ( 2 Corinthians 10:4). These weapons need to be engaged so that we can see the victory that Christ has won for us in our lives. What do I mean?

1.) Say out the promises of God for your life every day. The Word of God must be in your mouth to execute God’s counsel for your life. Find out the Scriptures that are relevant to what you want and write them out. Keep saying them out in the affirmative. By all means, avoid negative confessions flowing out of your mouth.

2.) Pray in the Spirit. The Spirit of God helps us to pray in precision, the will of God for our lives. We do not know exactly how to pray the things that really bring us peace but when we pray in tongues, the Holy Spirit who knows what we should be praying about prays through us. How cool is that! Prayb often in the Spirit, it is such an advantage that Christians do not take advantage of (1 Corinthians 2: 10-13).

3.) Praise. Praise. Praise. This cannot be overemphasized. There are so many instances of People praising God and blessings flowing as a result. We all like to be praised. Praise makes God happy and eager to do new things for us. Praise makes the devil mad and remember, it was praise that brought down the walls of Jericho. Praise God, praise Him now! Every wall of limitation in your life is brought down in Jesus’ name.

My final words to such a person will be an encouragement which is that God always has a plan. The process could be long, but the end result is sure. God usually saves the best for last.

I could go on and on but you could just search the internet and you will see that a lot of people we admire had their dreams come true later in life, even though some had theirs early, from entertainment to hospitality, fashion and so on.

Nothing is late until you give up. The moment you give up, whether early or later, it’s then you lose what you could have had. As long as you are still holding on to God’s promise, you will have it.
