Lessons from my Hunger Story

Spread the love

My husband and I like to have date nights as often as possible. Date nights should not be an occasional thing, they should occur regularly because we need to do the things that got us here, to sustain where we are. I feel like I just said a whole lot in that short phrase. Phew!

On this particular day in the picture below, I did something that most people are familiar with and that is what this post is about.

What did I do? It was a Sunday and I had lunch quite early, it was more or less what we call brunch since I had it midday, instead of breakfast and lunch. By the time date night came around, I was hungry. I’m a very light eater, so I was determined that I would not snack, otherwise, I would not be able to eat as much as I should when the time for the main meal came. We arrived at a restaurant we are quite familiar with and I placed an order for both of us.

Since I was hungry, every item on the menu looked appealing. I wanted a combination of many things for us and I simply requested that we have them. Does that sound familiar? I ordered anything that looked interesting, especially if it was a new item on the menu. I was not considering how much I could eat, but how hungry I was. The result was a heavier bill than we would typically spend at the particular restaurant but I kept going regardless.

I did not feel bad about the heavy bill at payment point, since everything I had ordered looked so good!

We soon dived into our food. This particular date had to be about food; first, because this girl was famished and second, because I had a lot of delicious-looking food before me that I had not lifted a finger to prepare. Shortly after ( remember, I am a light eater), I began to struggle to finish the plate of rice before me and could not even touch the extra plates of potatoes or bowl of chicken soup, and so on. I looked up and studied my husband for a bit, he was seated right before me. Maybe unlike me he was just starting out and would have a lot more? No, he had started to slow the pace; he had apparently had enough already too. So, it was clear at this point that we both had reached our consumption limits. This is when I started to feel bad…. How hungry I felt earlier, was not a good judge of what is right.

Here is a picture that I took on the particular Date Night

We can understand from this story that God is not unfair when He keeps some things that we want from us. He knows what we need per time. There’s a lot that we want to taste in this world that we do not need. When God allows us to have them like the prodigal son, it’s never a good experience. It leads to wastage and regrets.

It’s not until we get them that we realise that we didn’t need them. Godliness with contentment is great gain.

I pray that our desires will never lead us to regrets but joy always in Jesus name.
