Just like most young girls, Brenda looked forward to having her prince charming sweep her off her feet someday. When she was in her 200 level at the University, she was indeed swept off her feet by a prince charming and the romance led to a single time of sexual pleasure that got her pregnant. She became a single mother at the age of 22 and it was only because of the support of her family that she did not drop out of school.
While Brenda’s family supported her through the circumstance, her friends left her. She lost confidence in herself and felt like she was just passing through life. The turning point for her was when she met Jesus; while she grew up in a Christian family, it was not until this point that she got to know Him for herself. The way she saw herself then changed.
After her University education, she began to look forward to marriage. Every man who showed interest in her left her as soon as she told them that she had a child already. Some of such men even thought that they could have their way with her but as soon as they saw that it was not possible, they left her.
The external pressure to get married increased, as age was not on her side. Several people gave her different suggestions, which include that she should find just anybody to get married to, or find a divorcee since it would be a more meaningful equation, or just have more children for a married man since, in their opinion, no single man would want to marry her.
Brenda got tired of the pressures and eventually resolved that she would serve God without the care of marriage. She wanted to focus on being heaven-bound and at this point, she was 37 years old. Suddenly, afterward, many suitors showed up and she kept praying about them because a Scripture that she held dearly is 1 Thessalonians 5:17 which says “Pray without ceasing”. As she prayed along with believing friends, the suitors always left because they were not God’s will for her.
At about the same period, Brenda became friends with a man with whom she had shared their Pastor’s Bible Study message. It turned out that he was the brother to her friend of over 15 years. They discovered that they had a lot in common and they became really close friends. Brenda’s friend asked her to marry him and she knew that this was the will of God for her in marriage. She had peace about the proposal and she agreed to marry him.
Today, they have been married for over two years and are still best friends. While marriage is not a bed of roses and neither is life, Brenda is married to her friend and that makes the journey easier. They communicate a lot and keep growing and are grateful to God for what He has done.
